Rivet

Selecting and editing

Editing levels

Rivet works like ZModeler: pick a part first, then edit its points or faces.

KeyLevelYou select
1ObjectWhole parts
2VertexPoints
(tool header)EdgeEdges
3PolygonFaces
  1. At Object level, click a part in a view (or Alt+click its box in the tree).
  2. Press 2 or 3 to edit that part's vertices or faces.

Selecting

  • Click selects. Ctrl adds, Shift removes, Ctrl+Shift toggles.
  • Drag on empty space draws a box.
  • Ctrl+A all, Ctrl+D none, Ctrl+I invert. Grow / Expand (tool shelf) widen the selection.
  • At vertex or polygon level, L adds the connected piece under the cursor; at edge level it picks the edge loop.
  • Ignore backfaces (on by default) stops clicks grabbing the far side of a part.

Move, rotate, scale

  1. Pick the tool: W move, E rotate, R scale (press it again to switch between World and Local axes).
  2. Drag a handle of the gizmo. Alt while dragging snaps (5 cm, 15°, 0.1x). Right click or Esc cancels.
  3. The X Y Z buttons in the tool header (or the letters on a view's tripod) limit the axes.

Handy extras:

  • Arrow keys nudge with the Move tool: 1 cm, Shift 10 cm, Ctrl 1 mm.
  • Shift+D duplicates the selection and picks the copy up: move the mouse, click to put it down.
  • On surface (Move options): drag a part over the body and it sits on it, turning with the curve. Good for badges.
  • Custom pivot (each view's Pivot helper menu): rotate, scale and mirror about a point of your own.

Modelling tools

Find them on the Modify tab and the tool shelf. Each is one undo step.

ToolLevelWhat it does
Extrude (T)PolygonPull the selected faces out; drag up or down
Bevel / InsetPolygonShrink the faces inwards and raise them, with a ring of new faces
InsertEdgeA new point in the middle of each edge
BridgeEdgeJoin two open edge chains with a strip of faces
WeldVertexMove the selected points to one spot
BreakVertex / PolygonSplit points or faces loose
Slice / KnifeAnyCut across an axis / along a line you drag
MirrorAnyMirror across the axes that are on
Flip (F)Object / PolygonTurn faces round
SmoothAnySmooth normals by angle; sharper edges stay hard
Calculate normals (Shift+N)AnyRecompute normals
Clone / DuplicateObjectCopies, with an offset
RenameObjectRename many parts at once (find / replace, {n} numbers)

Deleting: Del deletes straight away, X asks first. To delete a badge and patch the hole, see Repairing geometry.

The right-click menu

Right-click (without dragging) in a view for: Edit (what fits the level), UV Mapping, Axes (move a part's pivot), Find in views, Linking, Rename and Properties. It never changes the selection.
